In their endless war of despair against hope, the Day Court and the Night Court fight on two fronts. On one hand, they often fight in the world of the fairies, fighting each other over territory. But perhaps even more importantly, they often visit the human world to try and sow happiness or despair--for the happiness or unhappiness of humans feeds each Courts' power in the world of the fairies. As they are cannot be seen by humans, however, their efforts were largely indirect.
Things suddenly change when the fairies find the shield. A magical crest emblazoned with a knight and enchantress, it allows them to recruit human soldiers into their war. The Day Court, the fairies which live on happiness, managed to obtain the enchantress half of the shield. This half gives them the magic to create Mahoujo, transforming magical girls who fight the Night Court--and who can see the fairies.
Mahoujo exist all over the world and are divided into different houses--House Gem, Sweets, Flower, Element, and Animal. Each Mahoujo's powers are centered on the essence of one aspect of their house. For example, you may have the Mahoujo Rose of House Flower, or the Mahoujo Sapphire of House Gem.
The Mahoujo of House Gem are centered on gemstones. Their powers feature defensive spells and attack spells that create physical projectiles.
The Mahoujo of House Flower are centered on flowers and plants. Their powers feature effects that impede opponents like vines to entrap, petals to blind, or poison to slow them down.
The Mahoujo of House Animal are centered on the creatures of the animal kingdom. Their powers feature very powerful physical attacks and spells that let them move quickly.
The Mahoujo of House Element - are centered on the elements of nature. Their powers feature a wide variety of spells that vary between each element.
The Mahoujo of House Sweets - are centered on the tastiest of kitchen concoctions. Their powers feature healing spells and spells that charge up to go off with a bang.
The Mahoujo of House Music - are centered on the music instruments of all kinds. Their powers feature powerful spells that require a team working together to execute.
A Mahoujo's call to action is when they see a Night Court fairy intervening in a human's life to cause sorrow. They might make an artist give up hope on drawing or a marriage begin to crumble toward divorce. If a Mahoujo isn't able to defeat the Night Court fairy responsible for a human's misfortune, the hope or love they have lost is gone forever.
